Hillside is changing things up a bit this Advent season to benefit many of the visitors to the HOPE.wrx food pantry. You are invited to participate in our first Reverse Advent Calendar ministry. Instead of receiving chocolate or a small gift each calendar day of Advent, why not give an item to someone in need? Each week during Advent, Hillside encourages our congregation to set aside items for food pantry visitors.

Here is the schedule:
Week 1, Dec. 3rd – Toilet paper or bath soap
Week 2, Dec. 10th – Shaving cream or disposable razors
Week 3, Dec. 17th – Deodorant or toothbrushes
Week 4, Dec. 24th – Feminine hygiene products or toothpaste

In addition to the groceries and supplies Hillsiders have generously donated to the food pantry for years now, HOPE.wrx is able to acquire groceries from Harvesters. Many pantry visitors are challenged to provide for themselves because, though the SNAP program helps them buy groceries, it does not cover personal care items. Many of our neighbors go without deodorant, bath soap, shampoo, and toothpaste. Since Harvesters does not provide hygiene products, HOPE.wrx must purchase these personal care items.

This year, Hillside is collecting these items during Advent as gifts to HOPE.wrx to fill pantry shelves with hygiene products. Bins will be set up in both foyers, and you are welcome to bring the weekly items each Sunday. Or, you can collect items through the Advent season in a bin in your home and bring them to Hillside on Christmas Eve, when we present a great big gift to HOPE.wrx. No minimum is required – one bar of soap will be as much appreciated as a case of toilet paper. Let’s make this a special Advent and Christmas for our community!

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

These words from Matthew's account of the Sermon on the Mount (6:19-21) reflect Jesus' views on wealth and acquiring possessions. It's surprising to remember that he spoke these words to a mostly peasant-class audience, where wealth and status was only dreamed of. And yet he reminded them not to chase after the things in life that will ultimately go away.

There's a humble attitude and outlook about Jesus that recalls our need to rely on God. Not just recalling that need, but modeling it for us as followers of Jesus.

What better way to be humble than to serve others? Giving of ourselves through service, charity and money is an act of humility because we place part of ourselves out there for the benefit of others. That's what the Giving Tuesday campaign is all about. When we make efforts to build up the lives of neighbors and strangers alike, we also live into the way of Jesus, recasting his image in our own lives.

I am excited about the opportunity that Giving Tuesday provides for non-profits. It enables us to reach out to a generous community on behalf of those on the margins, to advocate and work in support of better lives for all. I invite you to join in the generosity of Giving Tuesday through volunteerism or donation. To help Hillside reach people with Good News, click here.
